Understanding Code: The Foundation for Building With AI

AI can write code in seconds. But if you can’t read it, you can’t tell when it’s wrong, and it often is.

This course teaches you to actually understand code, so you can use AI as a powerful tool instead of blindly trusting it. No experience needed. We start from the very beginning and build up step by step.

What you’ll learn

You’ll start with Python, the easiest language to begin with and the one most connected to AI. Then you’ll move on to Java and object-oriented programming, where you’ll learn how real software is structured and organised. Finally, you’ll learn front-end development with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, so you can build things people can see and use.

Along the way, you’ll use AI the right way: asking it to write code, then checking, fixing and improving what it gives you. By the end, you’ll build a small project of your own with AI as your assistant, and you’ll know exactly what every part of it does.

Course Content

Module 1: Python, Thinking in Code
Learn the building blocks of programming with Python, the easiest language to start with and the one most connected to AI. You'll work with variables, loops, lists and functions, learn to read error messages without panicking, and practise spotting mistakes in AI-written code. You'll finish by building your own quiz or grade calculator.

Module 2: Java and OOP, Thinking Like an Engineer
Step up to Java and learn how real software is structured. You'll master object-oriented programming (classes, objects, inheritance and more), the ideas behind almost every large application. You'll also learn to judge whether an AI's design is actually good, and build a working library or bank account system.

Module 3: HTML, CSS and JavaScript, Building for the Web
Learn how websites are built, styled and brought to life. You'll create clean page structures with HTML, design layouts with CSS that look great on any screen, then use JavaScript to respond to clicks, update pages and pull in live data from the internet. Because you already know the core ideas from Python, you'll move quickly. Along the way, you'll review AI-built pages for broken layouts, accessibility problems and buggy scripts. You'll finish by building an interactive to-do list app.

Module 4: React, Building Modern Apps
Learn React, the tool behind many of today's biggest websites and apps. You'll build reusable components, manage data with state and load information from APIs, and see how it all connects back to the OOP ideas from Module 2. You'll also learn to review AI-generated components for bugs and poor structure.

Module 5: Capstone, Build a Weather App With AI
Put everything together by building a complete weather app in React, using AI as your assistant. You'll search for any city, pull live weather data from an API, and display it in a clean, responsive design, handling errors like unknown cities or failed connections along the way. Alongside the app, you'll keep an AI review log showing what the AI got wrong and how you fixed it. You'll finish with a real, working project that proves you don't just use AI, you understand the code behind it.
